How can you tell if a website uses SSL?

Today, most websites that deal with personal data use encryption. Social networking sites, online banks and online shops all rely on encrypted channels to protect their users' data from leaks.

The easiest way to tell whether a site is using SSL is to look at the address in the browser bar. If a web address starts with https:// instead of https://, you can be sure that there is an SSL connection between your computer and the server to protect the security of your data. Depending on the browser, an active SSL certificate may also be indicated by a padlock icon in the address bar.
